Traditional PHP development, particularly for newcomers, has focussed on the LAMP stack; most people learn MySQL side-by-side with PHP. The past several years have produced some real challengers to this model, with the addition of a variety of so-called "NoSQL" databases, many of which deploy on the cloud. This provides a huge change in development paradigms and deployment – both new challenges as well as opportunities.
