Really good introduction to search. Easy understandable explanation on search engins in general and excellent walkthrough of the different engines out there.
Ian Barber (12.Jun.2010 at 13:30)
Talk at Dutch PHP Conference 2010 (English - UK)
Despite being a key method of navigation on many sites, search functionality often gets the short end of the stick in development, either by handing the job over to Google or just enabling full text search on the appropriate column in the database. In this talk we will look at how full text search actually works, how to integrate local text search engines into your PHP application, and how it's possible to actually provide better and more relevant results than Google itself, at least for your own site.

Great talk, Ian kept it understandable for mere mortals and the comparison between search engines was very helpful.

Ian exposes the core algorithms of search solutions very clearly and reviews several projects that implement these. Perfectly balanced conference talk, great speaker that really masters the material.

Great talk! Liked to introduction to basic searchengine theory, not new but a bit more than I already knew. Lot's of different tools discussed so we can choose, nice! I really liked the balance between the tech part and the part about the usage of search to help the user.

Exactly what I was hoping to find and learn and a lot more.
It missed an overall comparison on what the pros and cons of the different solutions are.

One of the best talks at DPC10.
Introduction to various search engines such as Sphinx, Lucene & Solr. Intelligent speaker that gave some great hands-on (PHP) demo's.

I heard a lot of good things about this talk, but never had the chance to see it. Ian has the reputation of being a professor and proved to make good on that reputation.
Very technical, lots of algorithms, but quite easy to understand. Mission accomplished!

Great talk, conclusion for me: solr rocks (I already knew that but it was interesting to actually hear about the features in detail)
