Systems management is a complex and time consuming task that organizations of all sizes must deal with. Each year we experience increasing numbers of malware and virus threats due in part to vulnerabilities in third party software products. Software upgrades and patches are a necessity in order to help mitigate these vulnerabilities. At times we experience problems due to firmware and hardware driver incompatibilities and bugs that drive the need for a robust and reliable method of delivering hardware updates to the endpoints. Good reporting is essential for proactive measures, diagnostics and ongoing maintenance. To address these needs ECU and FPGCDI purchased the Dell Kace Kbox Systems Management Applicance to enable greater capability in managing and supporting desktop and laptop computer systems. In this presentation, we will discuss our implementations of the Kbox, including configuration, patch management, remote desktop support, systems maintenance, help desk, reporting and access to this valuable tool by internal and distributed IT staff.

It was very helpful to have the input/evaluation from the two presenters, each of whom had a slightly different experience/take on the same product, each having implemented different features/possibilities for this product. One was focused on an Institute of 350-400 users and the other 8,000 - 9,000 users. The setup for the two was different. Besides exploring the many features available for this product in some detail, just seeing how two different universities were using this product, each having different expectations was helpful [that is if I was a network manager].
