MongoDB is a scalable, high-performance, open source, document-oriented NoSQL database. It features document-oriented, JSON-based document storage and dynamic schemas providing simplicity, power and flexibility, combined with full indexes similar to what a traditional RDBMS user would expect. MongoDB also provides solid replication & high availability features as well as an auto-sharding system for transparent horizontal scalability.
This talk introduces MongoDB for developers who aren't familiar with it with a detailed introduction of how to work with MongoDB from PHP. This talk will cover the basics from installing the PHP driver and connecting to mongod to creating, inserting, querying for, and updating documents. We will also briefly touch on aggregation, geospatial indexes, GridFS and running database commands.

The presentation wasn't what I expected. Good presentation and learned about MongoDB through the query examples. I wish it included some information on MongoDB schema design, but the brief mention also helped a lot.

You can see that Derick is an experienced speaker, although MangoDB is an interesting topic, the presentation could be made much more interesting, by using real scenarios.

Great talk. Through its information it convinced me not to persue MongoDB any further (because of lack of transactions, the cumbersome syntax and I believe Derick mentioned that map-reduce support was not great either).

What I want to see in a NoSQL talk is how the system scales. This is the primary reason for leaving the SQL world after all. A large scale live comparison with MySQL would be welcome.

I think Derick is an excellent speaker and this was another fine talk. I haven't seen any examples that urged me to try it for replacing my existing solutions or future solutions on a short term, but I know it thanks to this presentation. Good job Derick!

Nice intro to MongoDB. I'm a beginner myself, so I enjoyed it. And because Derick is the master of the old school in the PHP scene, he has tons of experience.

I want to see more of this and I'm happy that Derick is doing talks on new subjects.
