MySQL Fulltext Indexing and PHP in Web Search

It is always challenging for PHP (any web developer in general) to implement search in the Web Portals. For instance, Product search on a E-Commerce Portal. There is a indexing type in MySQL called "Fulltext Indexing" and it can make developer's life easier in making the search work well. However, Fulltext Indexing itself is tricky! Why not MySQL experts and people who have already implemented this share their experiences and give other some tips and tricks?

Why not use real "search engines" rather then making your own?
I'd like to know the dirty tricks when trying to do fuzzy matching of short strings though..

Real "search engines"?
The goal is to pull ideas from all participants in order to solve a problem.

The problem is "What's the best way to implement/perform product search in my PHP e-commerce Web Application"
