GraphQL hot or not? How to use it to simplify communication of API based services

It is already 3 years since 2015 (GraphQL release date). Is it worth to choose GraphQL rather than RestApi approach? What are the main issues, obstacles, and how to solve them? Is it hard to implement GraphQL in PHP? I will look at those questions and try to give answers based on some real-life examples.
