In late 2016, Steve Grunwell left his comfortable agency position as a Lead Web Engineer to join a small media startup as its first Director of Technology.

One of the major draws to the startup was its complete lack of technical debt: he'd be in charge of deciding everything they used, from hosting platforms, platforms, and office tools. The opportunity was perhaps the greenest of fields Steve had ever laid eyes upon.

While the company ended up not being the right fit for him, the lessons learned from researching, evaluating, and deploying the solutions have informed recommendations and decisions in his career post-startup.

Attendees will gain insight into the technology needs and available solutions for a small, web-based publisher, and the criteria which led to each decision.

as a senior developer that migrated to be a directory of technology, you showed me on how another director of technology made decision on choosing specific technology, that gave me ideas how another director of technology think. it is very helpful.
btw, i am very grateful that i have a very good sysadmin that took over tricky tasks from my plate (like what you mentioned on VPN or monitoring issues)

Steve does a great job keeping his audience engaged. This was a fun look at his real world experience of evaluating and deploying technology solutions.

I think that this was a very interesting presentation that I will be sharing with my own CTO. Just having a view at a full technology stack implementation and the thoughts behind the choices and seeing how those choices panned out was a very informative view.
