How not to design a toad

The talk had some interesting elements, but was a bit slow paced and focussed on font / colors and boxes. Would have hoped for more usability and examples. Maybe you didnt have enough content and tried to speak slower to compensate?

Nice talk

Need better fonts

More examples on good/bad design? I guess more examples about how to use and not to use the grid systems was why I came to your talk. Too bad it wasn't covered

It was okay. But it needs more examples. I have had and have seen better tasks from Mike.

too much about Visual design, expected more about interaction design.

Slightly on the short side (it felt a little rushed), could've focused a bit more on UX & mobile/web interoperability.

Would've liked some more real world examples and some additional discussion of forms (dealing with large forms etc). Overall a good talk with lots of 'should be common sense' stuff but often overlooked by devs. Could've used more vampire kittens!

It was a good talk, but you could make it a lot better by adding examples of how to improve your design. For example how to make a page that has lots of functions but still is accessibel for people. Or how to display lots of information efficiently..

Talk had some good points, but was slow. I also think that you never should say something is wrong without explaining why. there are loads of good arguments and reasons to support the statements.

Thanks for all the feedback thus far. I will definitely use these tips to improve the talk!
The slides will have the right fonts do please come back and review them if you are interested. And please keep providing feedback, I appreciate it

I wished the fonts would have been working, but there was some good content in there. Mike did a good job presenting an abstract topic like this.

Started slow but had some interesting bits. Expected more about user interfaces. Try to use more lists in your sheets instead of lots of sheets with only a few words.

Nice and clear talk. Would like to see some more examples of good/bad practices. (and more kittens ;))

Had hoped for more on interaction design rather than just colors and fonts. I think that most of the tips and ideas mentioned are already known to the audience, and the level of the talk could be considerably higher. Tip: Always save your slides as PDF to prevent problems when needing to run them on another laptop.

Woud encourage you to use applications as an example (why not use Jenkins?) in stead of a product made by a designer and comment on that.
It takes the message from what you are trying to tell me.

Do try again on another topic of your interest.

Nice subject, but on the short side and could use more UI examples.

Too bad the technical issues came up.

I'd expected to see more examples of interaction design and design patterns. Otherwise good one!

Good talk, but needed more examples and/or real life cases. Maybe describe the process from A to Z.

Risky topic: bringing front-end development to developers. With a last-minute laptop switch, things didn't go according to plan (missing fonts..) but Mike took it well.
The talk itself indeed was a little slow and it would have been great if at least one front-end framework would have been treated.

I expected more practical tips or examples on designing a UI for an application.

For example, the first working version of something I've developed always has the worst GUI, because I want everything to work and then worry about design later, what are good ways to make this crappy GUI better?

I like the idea for this talk but I would have loved to see some more examples. I don't think analyzing the DPC website is a very realistic example; it's aiming waaaay too high. The kind of websites 'developers' make are sites like your phpDocumentor. Choosing the right fonts and colors only becomes important on the very high end websites. I think the focus should be more on content, structure and interaction.

You've done better but still I think this talk had it's moments. The fact that you were rather nervous and there were technical difficulties didn't help. Good job Mike

Interesting topic so i had high expectations; the talk was a little bit slow and not fluent. But i can imagine the technical difficulties had their influence.

As mentioned before, examples! Technical difficulties are easy to see through but things remained too abstract. Analyzing the DPC site on box model was a good idea, why not talk about their color schema, their fonts, and compare it to two other sites / applications?

Really did like your drive and the idea itself though.

Interesting topic for a developer conference! It was well presented and there were some technical difficulties which Mike handled very professionally.
The talk contains a nice basic set of tips.

Since there was time left, put in some more tips and tricks perhaps together with some more examples.

Talk pace was quiet slow, which makes it easy to follow, but easy to lose attention as well. Luckily it had a kitten right in the middle! Well done Mike!

Very interesting talk. Some good points in there as well. I really liked the pauses between the different topics, makes you think about it what is being said. I think that is valuable to get your message across as well. You are a good speaker, any positive critics I already told you :)

Too bad we didn't get to see any fonts, but please link your slides, so we still can! I really liked the calm manner you spoke with, specially because it was the first talk of the day. Interesting topic and I hope to see the entire talk once.

I really missed examples of bad/good practices. For example you could show how the dpc page with the correct margins will look like.

The talk was also a little bit too short.

I expected the talk to be more in-depth with more real world examples. Too bad about the technical problems. For the rest of it: well done.

Pretty good stuff. In particular the slides about "design for colour-blind persons" were really interesting and opened my eyes another time.

Much of trivial. I get bored in few minutes and almost slept. Try to focus more in real problems/solutions, do not waist time in small details.

Expected more of this one. Too much focus on obvious stuff and details. Slow and fragmented presentation.

Was a bit disappointed on this talk. Did not really pick up anything new. Speaker probably needed more research or expertise in the area.

A little bit too much of design for me... However I learned some new things about design and grids :)

Nice explanation of the basics.

Not a bad talk. Well given despite the technical difficulties. I was kind of hoping on more examples and ways to display large amounts of data.

All in all I did pick up a few things since I don't do a lot of designing.

Nice talk.
General stuff most of us already knew but somehow everyone keeps forgetting them when rushing to code. A good reminder.

Expected something better.

By the description of its presentation, I expected a whole lot else. More good/bad practise examples. Less text, more screenshots.

But I love'd the "You got bored yet? Have a kitten!" joke ;)
