Matthew Weier O'Phinney (Jun 11, 2009)
Talk at Dutch PHP Conference 2009 (English - US)

Rating: 4 of 5

At well over 10 million downloads, Zend Framework has become a standard PHP development tool worldwide. In this workshop, we will introduce you to the project, giving a brief synopsis of its history and what it offers, including the new features available in version 1.8.

The bulk of the workshop will focus on using Zend Framework. Particular attention will be paid to its various extension points -- its rich set of plugin architectures, and how they can be leveraged to customize applications.

Again Matthew has presented Zend Framework in a very logical, technical but understandable way. He's the Zend Framework master and has proven me again I'll always be the pupil.

Awesome !!!

Excellent talk, fairly low level but not boring. Covering a lot of ground, including some of the newer features.

I've been using ZF for quite some time now and still learning a lot of new things with this talk. Not really in depth, but still very interesting!

I've been using ZF in a few projects recently but still learned a lot on how to do things and also evolved my ideas on good ways to do things. A very full day with a good variety of topics covered in an engaging way. Thanks Matthew!

Have done a few small projects now with ZF, this talk helped me understand the ZFs plugin architecture.
+1 for handing out the entire presentation with code samples on a USB thumb drive.
+1 for leaving enough time at the end for live coding and random questions.
Wish I would've been there in the morning!

As a relative newcomer to ZF, i thoroughly enjoyed this presentation. Matthew was obviously very comfortable with the subject (duh!) and had a very flexible presentation style that allowed for a lot of a lot of interesting questions being answered clearly on the spot.

One minor gripe: As most attendees were Dutch, some of the terms and abbreviations used are not common for as, and using too much of them in a sentence can distract from the actual message itself. Maybe a good chance to review some of the wording use. (and add those echo's to the slides :) ).

Thanks Matthew.

Matthew did a great job in this extended presentation on explaining the surface of Zend Framework and the indepth of some components. He knows how to teach and motivate the attendees to use Zend Framework. He is very approachable and helps you as much as he can. Both thumbs up!

Matthew is an excellent speaker and this tutorial, though very theoretical, gave me an excellent insight in the recommended structure of Zend Framework projects. It was very nice to see all the new ZF1.8 features and it very much inspired me to have a much closer look to ZF.

I really enjoyed this tutorial. Having produced two or three ZF applications now I wanted some information on best practice, suggested architecture and also how to use components individually. I wasn't disappointed!

Very nice clear introduction and overview of ZF. From quickstarting a project with ZF utility and basic settings to dbTables, controllers, actions, views, helpers and decorators, etc.

On a sidenote... I thought the examples and slides could have been a bit better by having less faults in them.

Working with ZF (only) for several month now, I actually could not get any useful in-depth knowledge out of this talk.
Moreover I'd have wished to hear some critics on ZF where appropriate, but instead every point raised by the audience was neglected and it felt like a promotion for ZF. Even obvious weaknesses were wiped off with doubtful explanations.

I attended the session with low expectations, as I thought it was going to be about the basics of ZF, and the MVC pattern. But I was pleasantly surprised. It started of with a bit of Zend_Tool and Zend_Application. Two new components I know virtually nothing about. Then there was some stuff that I did know, but it was still interesting to see how Matthew used everything in his examples. (Zend_Auth, Zend_Acl, Zend_Db_Table, ...)
After lunch break, I enjoyed the demo about using Zend_Form as an input filtering & validation chain. The explanation about Plugins & Decorators was also something I was curious about.

All in all, the session had the ideal amount of detail for me, and I'm very glad I have attended it. One of the conference highlights. Good job Matthew.

I enjoyed this talk, even though it was targeted a bit below my own level of expertise. Matthew is very easy listening, anyway.

Matthew managed to have me listen to him for a full day. After the workshop I was still energetic. The workshop gave me a confirmation that I am on the right track and that I understand the Zend_Form component more than I thought.
I wish I could have more lessons from the master himself. Anyway, his workshop gave me an extra motivation to go on muddling through, experimenting and maybe even contributing in the near future.
Thanks Matthew!
