JOHNNY RIVERS in Concert
OCT 26, 2018
Arena Theatre Houston
Rock and pop legend Johnny Rivers’ career has spanned and been entwined with the whole history of rock n’ roll. The singer, songwriter, guitarist, and record producer who gave the world the mega-hit “Secret Agent Man,” has created some of the best loved hits in pop music, across genres and generations. At the height of the British Invasion in 1964, Rivers was one of the first American rockers to regain a place on the charts with a stripped-down straight-ahead rock style. A steady stream of Top 10 record followed. A chance spot filling in at a friend’s late-night restaurant in LA made Rivers hugely popular on the West Coast and led to his long performing and recording association with Whiskey A Go-Go. Famed most for his covers, it was ironic that his number one hit was a rare original song, "Poor Side of Town." As the sixties gave way to the seventies, Rivers’ sound became more elaborate and produced, while focusing on his voice. The seventies ended with the number 10 hit, “Swayin’ to the Music,” which still enjoys extensive play.
