If you were a carpenter, would your skills at building be more important than the tools you use to build? Skills, right? Tools are just a means to an end. So why do developers think the language they use defines the problems they solve?

This talk will take a look at misconceptions across the board, some experiences, both positive and negative, people have had crossing barriers to new languages, and show some of the benefits thinking of one’s self as a coder and not a “Ruby coder” or a “PHP dev” can have on being a better problem solver.

PJ gave a good keynote and made great points on the benefits of a community and how to reach across barriers. He brings a different perspective with his background with other programming languages.

This is an excellent talk, and one that I think is an important message for anyone who likes to argue that X is better than Y as a programming language, This is something I hear a lot in universities I visit and I think that it's a really important time for us all to be encouraging cross-pollination between communities and languages.

Good talk, but I felt it didn't quite match up with the title/abstract. I thought the last few slides moved through in silence created a powerful effect.

A bit too much anedotical examples of "other" platforms to the deteriment of how that relates with the "PHP dev". A bit more focus on the current audience will improve the talk as the listener / viewer will relate better with the experience.

PJ is a rock star, because he is a good speaker and actually plays rock music.

Loved the Ruby references, because it shows that other communities have the same struggles, similar values, similar goals.
