10 years ago I was a lonely developer sitting in a small room quietly turning out code between 9am and 5pm, Monday to Friday. Fast-forward to now and you'll see me standing in front of audiences all around the world talking to developers about numerous topics."Why are you bragging like that at me?" I hear you ask. Because it could happen to you too.
The question I always ask myself is "How the hell did that happen?!?!".
The truth is that the only reason I've managed to advance my career so far in a decade is because of the people that make up the communities of open source projects. Not only do open source projects save you time and money, but the friendships and support groups that can be made within these communities is, frankly, staggering.
Join me as I chart my journey from wage slave to conference speaker, and look at how you can leverage the power of open source to make real friends, real money, and real happiness.

Excellent excellent talk. I love the practical tips to contributing to open source. I especially love all the humor brought into the talk. It makes it really engaging. And who doesn't love making more money by contributing to open source.

I left Gary's keynote with a renewed desire to give back to the open source community. He's an inspiring speaker with a message that really resonated with me. Almost all of the work I do revolves around open source projects, from the base OS, all the way up the entire stack.

Excellent keynote that really made me reflect. Especially the trips down memory lane every MAME ROM slide that came up. Thank you for dispelling some of my fear on contributing back to open source projects I use. Your story of becoming a Zend Contributor inspired me to get out the shallow end of the FOSS pool and go use the diving board.

Great speaker. I'm growing a bit weary of the open-source contribution emphasis at this conference but this talk was so well presented that you can't help but feel inspired by the story.
Awesome talk and took plenty away from it even if it was the 2nd time I've seen it. It goes to show that even the smallest OS contribution that served as scratching you own itch can lead to greater things.
