Youโve got strange characters like โ๏ฟฝโ or โรยถโ display in your application? Yes, handling non-English characters in application code, files and databases can be a challenge, to say the least. Whether thatโs German Umlauts, Cyrillic letters, Asian Glyphs or Emojis: Itโs always a mess in an international application. In this session you will see why that is and how handling characters evolved in computing. You will also see how handling characters in applications and databases can be done less painfully. And donโt worry when EBCDIC, BOM or ISO-8859-7 are Greek to you and your Unicode is a bit rusty: weโll have a look at them too!

Seriously though, nice talk.
Slight nitpick: file_get_contents(), not file_read_contents() on your iconv/mbstring slide.
ISO-8859-7 is still Greek to me -- but now I know why.

Fun fact - the title in joind.in is not utf8mb4 and the unicorn is displayed as empty rectangle. Now we know why ^^

Although it was my second time listening to this talk, it was just as entertaining. It does not come down only to the inside info and pitfall warnings, the distinction between charset and encoding, but also to the very entertaining fashion by which the speaker presents the material. Definitely an eye-opener talk for a lot of people and very useful to anyone that deals with not-just-ascii strings in their code or DB.
Clear and well-presented treatment of a complex topic.
I've learned a lot during this talk and not just that, I started thinking about things I never really thought about before. Very informative and entertaining.
