We are in the midst of a worsening climate crisis, and open source and open data are important parts of the solution. A look at how OSS/open data are being used by ecologists with real examples, where there are significant problems in their usage, and a rallying call that we can/must do better!

Any website or web application facing the public internet makes an enticing target for would-be attackers! A web application firewall (WAF) is a vital layer of defence which inspects and filters web traffic. How does a WAF work and what free and open-source solutions are there? OWASP is here to help.

LLMs in search engines told us to put glue on our pizza and eat a small rock every day. This is not ideal. Maybe it's time for a new sort of search? In this talk I'll sketch out some possible futures and look at how we can put search back in the hands of the searcher. There will be memes.

Talk description: * Disclaimer - okay the title is clickbait, but now that I have your attention...* In a parallel universe, many lightyears away, Norman is a Neurotypical person living in a world where Neurodivergent people form the majority and are considered the "norm". Join Norman on his journey through a society that views his Neurotypical brain as "disordered", giving a different but empathetic perspective on the challenges that neurodivergent people face in our universe today. Through pretty weird and light-hearted humour, this talk will challenge perceptions and highlight how empathy can reduce shame and help us close the divide. Bio: Parul began her career in tech recruitment, and it was during this time she got her ADHD diagnosis; her Autism diagnosis followed a few years later. Parul started neurodiversity advocacy work in her last tech corporate job before quitting in January to devote 100% of her time to achieving her mission to build a brighter future for Neurodivergent people in tech. Parul loves connecting people and building inclusive and meaningful communities. She has been heavily involved in the Manchester tech community since early in her career; co-organising Manc Web Meetup, organising TechRiseMCR and sitting on the board of Manchester Tech Festival. Outside of work you'll either find her playing on her Nintendo Switch, playing piano, eating or at the gym.

HPR is dedicated to Sharing Knowledge, and we release podcasts every weekday Monday through Friday on any topic that is of Interest to Hackers. We intend to cover every item in the HAREC syllabus, thus removing “The EXAM” from getting in the way of people to get into the HAM Radio hobby.

It's been 5 years since the last OggCamp and a lot has changed in the free culture world since then! Our panel will discuss where things have gone right and wrong, and then look ahead to the next 5 years. What's likely to happen in free culture and beyond; and more importantly, what can we all do to change things for the better?

Come hear the story of the journey from OpenOffice, through LibreOffice to Collabora Online. Hear about the code we repaired, re-factored, re-wrote and discarded, see some of the things we emptied from the dust-bin of bad design ideas, and language choices over many decades. Hear about the excitement of bringing it to the wonderful, new, clean, web world - only to discover that the zoo of poor design decisions made it into browsers well in advance of us. Despite all of this, see how we’re optimizing, and delivering a beautiful, open-source, in-browser, scalable, cloud-native, collaborative document editing experience built on LibreOffice.

Disruptive notion: digital inclusivity is less about giving people access to technology or digital skills and more about connecting on what it means to be human. By putting people before pixels, we stand a far better chance to narrow the digital divide by getting at its true source.

The social web shouldn’t be centralised; we can do better with things like ActivityPub, which links up a huge array of interoperable social sites run by normal people, not massive companies. This talk will explain how it operates, why it’s great, and how you can get started with it in your own work.
