Was very inspiring
Thijs, as you know I'm a big fan of the way you do your talks. You have great charisma and stage presence.
I know you put a lot of effort into the slides to have them contain small little videos and kudos for that. It definitely paid off.
Now, I see there is a lot going on in the other comments about the content. In the sense of privilege and so on.
So I rated it based on how I received the message.
I felt inspired to keep on working hard, do more UG and try to perform better at work. The notes about positivity and complaining is something I understand all to well. Having been there with a burn-out as a result. Trying to see things positive and handling the setbacks instead of complaining about them has helped me a lot. Great talk!
I think that this is an interesting subject as a lot of people work with API's these days.
Like Matthias said, this is a bit of a dry subject and the time of day was a bit against you.
Some suggestions on how you could try to improve it:
- Add some more color to the slides (Don't make it a colouring book), the slides now were a bit plain.
- With a room as wide as this one I think it's a good idea to walk around a bit from side to side. This will give the audience a focus point when they are done looking at the current slide.
- Interactivity is also a good way to add more vibe to a dry subject like this
- And if you're up to it you can always add a little humour
Now these are just suggestions. Play around with them and try to find what works for you. You'll get there! Good luck!
A topic nobody likes, but everybody needs. Great talk!
Great story, but like others have said: I was expecting a little more Kafka.
The (linked) code samples are very useful. I'll try this out!
What can I say, Pim is a great speaker who mixes interactivity and humour with great content.
Seeing him talk is always fun.
The warning at the beginning was a good idea and the examples were great!
I don't think I can add anything else at this point. It's a must watch!
Great talk!
Loved the pros and cons. Might have benefited from a little more examples
I always appreciate the way Pim has meaningful interaction with audience. This couldn't be more true for this talk. The way Pim interacted with the audience added a whole new dimension to the information he was sharing. Conveying information in a clear manner is a special skill, but being able to convey information and then demonstrating the information in a perfect manner is a skill which is nearly extinct.
For this reason I really recommend every developer should attend this talk when they have the opportunity to. I didn't check my phone or watch a single time during the talk. I think this is a pretty clear talk for a brilliant talk.
This is opening keynote material. This way Pim can act as an inspirator for an even greater audience!
