After two days of *what* and *how*, it was nice to sit back and listed to the *why*. Luke was very relate-able as he discussed the balance between business, code, and life. If delivering this talk again show the tools slide but don't describe them all--it really affected the pace at the end.
I took a lot out of this talk. Seeing the various tools that are used by a company every day to monitor their code was helpful. Lots of examples, and recommended paid-for services that can help make this easier to manage/setup. Interesting to see how easy it is to send metrics down UDP and see near-real-time graphing of the metrics.
Heather's speaking style is very calm, comfortable, and clear to follow. The slides were engaging, and the information was presented in an interesting, but easy to understand way. I learned so many things that I can instantly apply to my talks, my mentoring, and even just my daily interactions with other developers. Great job, Heather! You nailed it!
Enjoyed the talk. Good overview of some of the features of MongoDB that aren't familiar to those of us who are just starting to use it. I was able to take a lot of notes. The full-text search was interesting to see, but as the speaker mentioned is only useful as a starting point for search. Indexing and geospatial indexes were very interesting to learn about.
Good overview of modern ways to cache in PHP. Not only were there practical examples of using the tools, but some good theory was also presented.
A good tutorial. Having the application as an example was very helpful, and having it as a vagrant box made it quick to get started.
I do agree with many of the comments about the lack and misplacement of this talk. But there is a softer side that I think people were not expecting, this to me was more about inspiring others to follow suit. Not about talking ScriptED directly, but in providing a basis, a starting forum for other groups to form in other cities. I think this should have come across more clearly that the goal was to inspire. Still though more content in how others could do the same would have been more helpful. In my own city we have a similar program for low rating schools as well as one targeted specifically to girls. This talk for me was more of a "call to arms... keyboards" that we can all make a difference. That message just should have been more defined.
Can't have a great conference without some good sponsors. Thanks Softlayer for being a part of it.
You can't $hat here, it might buffer overflow.
Loved this talk so much. I just started my first major modernizing project ever, so the timing is perfect. It's great to hear that I don't have to do it all at once, that I can do it a piece at a time (in fact, that I *should*).
