He clearly put a good amount of time into setting up multiple working examples, enabling him to show live demos and live benchmarks. I appreciated seeing more working examples of the use of yield / generators as I slowly wrap my head around what those do and how to use them. As with any live demo, there were some minor bumps along the road, most of which he was able to fix quickly and keep moving. The last demo didn't cooperate, but he handled it gracefully and offered to stay around to get it working if anyone wanted to see it, but ending the session essentially on-time in order to avoid keeping others past the scheduled end time.

Despite the obvious knowledge of the presenter the content didn't really reflect the title. The talk was more about 'preventing technical debt from being incurred' than 'reducing technical debt' that already exists. It would be helpful if the talk really followed tutorial format with some real life examples and code refactoring. As is it fits regular presentation session more than it does tutorials.

Excellent talk - Joe gave us a lot of great ideas for how to get started modernizing a legacy application. I'm really anxious to sit down with my team and start implementing some of these strategies.

Steve gave great, down to earth advice that's applicable to people at any phase of their career. His delivery style was very human—mixing humor with serious personal examples in a way that was very engaging. Would attend again.

All good advice, and I got a few good ideas about how to get more involved and be a better member of the community.

Simply awesome. Steve shared lots of great advice and critical knowledge in his wonderful anecdotes and experiences. Every aspiring developer should see this talk. Well done.

One of the best, most honest, and humorous talks of the conference (that I attended), very personal and genuine. Great speaker.

I came after another talk and saw about 1 hour of this session. Very Informative and well explained, especially on how to detect where changes would be needed in our code.

I will definitely look at the slides to catch up on what I've missed

Lot of good history and information on the Enigma machine, implementing simple state machines. Good talk about early crypto and how it was broken.
