Your talk was incredible. I've never been to a conference or meetup talk where the crowd was listening with such silence and attention as this one. It takes a lot of courage and self-confidence to address the points in your talk.
I was supposed to live-blog your talk but I couldn't. I was too drawn to your talk to do anything else except for listening to it. I'm someone who gets emotionally very fast and I had a really hard time to keep my emotions in check during your talk. Needless to say, your talk left quite an impact on me.
I know first hand how it can be how people are mistreated in our industry. Not just verbally but mentally as well. For some employers, employees are just assets to help them achieve their goals and can be discarded and used as they wish. Minorities, wether they are targeted by their race, gender or something else will always be the victim unless we actively strife to change that.
What we can do about this is talk about it and accept and recognise that these problems are real, that they exist and that we should work together to solve them. With the Code Manifesto I really believe we're that much closer to solve those problems. Thanks for one of the most intense/best talks I've ever been to.
Before hearing this talk I'd already decided to use annotations on an upcoming package, but this helped underline why that's a good choice. He did a great job explaining how they work, and why they are beneficial.
Wonderful talk.
Awesome talk, good demos and great idea to have videos in case they didnt work, live demos /coding demos can be a nightmare but it was well planned. I'm just getting into using Vagrant and it's inspired me to jump in and start setting up vagrant boxes per project. We're using Chef in work but I think I'm going to try Ansible first I was so impressed :P
Great Talk, Great Subject.
Matt "Mr. Charismatic" Stauffer. What a performer. I think he just a well could have talked about pencils and I would still be fascinated. I normally tend to prefer more in depth talks than this, but the talk just pulled you in. Very keen to see this speaker do more talks, a speaker to keep an eye out for.
Knowing the speaker and having seen his talks in the past, I can surely say Mitchell's speaking skills have improved a lot! Super happy to see that growth. As a piece of constructive feedback I would say that it could go toward the point a little faster. When that happens you can then give a couple of examples more easily so people first, 1) get the concepts, 2) see the implementation, 3) see the possibilities. Having a structure like this, where you also have examples probably would have exposed the absence of relations in the talk during the writing process of the talk. The thing that kept me from giving the full 5 stars was that and that alone. I liked the humor, I liked the overview that was given in the talk and I liked the way he handled the crowd.
I absolutely loved this talk. Using different tools outside the PHP domain to spot problems and analyse things really makes sense. As a PHP community it's important to understand where our "domain" starts and ends, just as important is to know how we can look beyond that. Very well executed, it set the bar nice and high for the rest of the speakers.
This talk can show what can be done when you apply your mind to it.
For me, this was the best talk of the conference. Learned something useful about a new, for me, piece of software with a practical example on how to use this within your Laravel application.
Also, Ben, your presence on the stage is really natural and your speech is very clear and for me in a great pace to follow.
