Excellent keynote, and a brilliant and inspiring start to the day overall. This was the first time I've seen Ian talk and it was simply superb!
Beautiful slides but with far too much content on them, which was distracting as I can't read and listen at the same time. The delivery was great, relaxed and engaging at the same time, good use of questions and pauses, and with some dynamic range. I wasn't sure the content was well-structured or targeted, although I thought that the individual points were nicely made. Overall: good job.
Stefan made great use of his extensive experience and gave some excellent advice which new and experienced speakers alike would do well to listen to. The talk lacked a storyline however, and didn't seem to be sized correctly for the length of the slot. I'd say content: 5, but delivery not at the same standard.
I had the pleasure of introducing Ian and then sitting about 8 feet away during the talk and it blew me away. A great balance of inspiration, geekery, and stories from close to home - what a way to kick off the event!
Simply brilliant. Thijs has never ceased to deliver when presenting, and this was no exception.
I'm eagerly awaiting a Thijs keynote.
This was a well delivered, well paced tutorial that has pointed me in the right direction to hunt down and research the areas discussed in more detail.
I have been developing using a LAMP stack commercially for two years having moved to PHP from a background of developing desktop applications with Microsoft .NET (C#).
I attended this talk in the hope that it would 'fill in the gaps' from what I have learnt 'on-the-fly' over 2 years of experience with PHP, via books, blog posts and working in a development team.
Whilst this tutorial confirmed that I am aware of most of the key security considerations for a LAMP developer, Arne covered certain areas in far more detail than I was aware of, especially regarding Cross Site Request Forgery and session hi-jacking.
It was great to see code examples, of which most were short, concise and to-the-point and helped to fast track the time it took for a concept to 'click'.
Arne kicked off with an ice breaker, encouraging delegates to briefly introduce themselves and their background. From there on in, Arne kept the tutorial interesting by making the session interactive by getting delegates to engage in 'What's wrong with this code' style questions, which made for some really interesting and fun debates.
I certainly felt I came away from this talk having a more in-depth understanding of security concepts I knew of, but didn't know much about.
Thanks for the tutorial, well presented.
Good talk, really good to see the shift away from ActiveRecord to using DataMapper. For me it would have benefited of the practical use and less on the more theoretical parts at the start as these became clearer after seeing the more practical side.
Great stuff, really needed a longer time slot though.
Excellent talk about joind.in, good to hear about how it benefits speakers and conference organisers. Lorna managed to enthusiastically make the case for providing feedback for talks and for contributing to the project despite it being only a fifteen minute talk.
This was a really inspiring talk. Ian's a great speaker and it was really nice to hear some of the history of programming and to be reminded that even the small things we do can lead to great things. A great way to start a conference!
