An interesting talk. I would have preferred some actual code examples of how Stuart's system was implemented, and also felt that the use of 'components' to describe the system was a little ambiguous, but there were some good concepts put across in the talk, and especially for internal teams and those developing software products I believe it was a very useful talk.
Very much liked how Morgan got straight into the real technical guts of how InnoDB worked. Treated everyone listening as though they were equals and respected that they were technically capable. A highly technical talk for a technical audience - we need more talks like this.
I may be somewhat biased, being a big fan of RPGs and World of Warcraft, but Sebastian's use of these analogies really amused me and helped to grab my attention and interest very early on.
Once getting past these analogies, the meat of the talk was very on-topic and sensible. There were a great number of tools mentioned for us to look into, and some excellent agile concepts that helped to clarify whether we were doing things right or not.
Thanks for a great talk.
Well put together, but I didn't think it reached far enough to the 'advanced' level the title suggested.
Have to say I was very disappointed with this talk. As a primarily back-end developer, I was hoping to find out more about a technology I don't have a massive amount to do with.
What I got was an opening half-hour about Internet Explorer 9. It took 30 minutes to actually get onto the topic of the talk. Martin took every opportunity to namedrop as much about Microsoft as possible. He even shoe-horned in a mention fo Microsoft's new partners Nokia.
Seriously.
Once we did finally get onto the actual topic of the talk, it was ok, but nothing spectacular. I have been told since by other folk who were there that a number of espoused facts were presented in a skewed fashion or quite wrong.
Martin, if you want to gain credibility in these talks, please just stick to the topic of the talk. Don't try and throw in your employer's details. Don't go on about your favourite browser. Just stick to the topic, and do it well. You'll get a lot more respect from it.
Very good and agreeable point of view delivered in the first 10 minutes, but I felt that the rest of the presentation focussed too much on the structure of an application component. That doesn't detract though from interesting content and good delivery, of which I'd very much like to see a follow-up at a future conference.
Superb talk - great level of content and brilliant delivery from Morgan Tocker. Given me a much better understanding of why the choice of InnoDB and setup in our application.
So great to attend a talk from the author of a tool that I use every day and to learn more about its abilities. Brilliant!
I'm in total agreement with @marcgear. The keynote hit the right notes in places (when Marco was telling anecdotes), but lacked some energy and possibly tried to hard to force home the point. I could have listened to 30 mins on Disney though!
Some excellent examples of patterns presented, as well as lots of code samples and some good questions back and forth from the audience. Very glad that I attended this talk.
