I liked the presentation style, the slides were great and you guys played nicely off each other.
I'll admit I only attended as they ran out of space in track 3, so perhaps it's a little unfair of me to say that I wasn't as inspired as I might have hoped (I had mentally prepared for the other technical talk). But I guess you are also preaching to choir which is why I felt there wasn't really anything new here.
Perhaps some more examples of how to contribute to open source might have helped, or clear examples of the tangible benefits to businesses who open source their code, as it felt a bit too vague and anecdotal at times
An interesting talk covering a lot of material, sadly let down by the projectors dislike of the contrast on the slides. Luckily I was close to the front so didn't miss out too much!
The presentation style was good with some nice clear, if simple, examples. I learnt a lot but I'll need to review the slides a few times to familiarise myself more with the concepts in order to translate them into real world scenarios.
A good overview to a topic that is somewhat outside my usual area, though I did need to use some of these tools just the week before!
The presentation style was good, entertaining and approachable to what could be quite a dry subject. I have no doubt I'll refer to my notes for some of these tools in the future!
What I like most about the talk is that it refreshed my memory on somethings I already knew but hadn't used in a while. I used strace this week to debug a problem but might not have thought of using it if I hadn't attended the talk. The talk had really good content and covered key areas that can assist any php developer. I Enjoyed the bit of humour thrown in to.
A good talk with nice slides and no information overload. Your talk was more of an overview of things you learnt from personal experience than a technical talk about scalability.
Having said that, you got me thinking about application separation and scalability so I would say that was a job well done! I felt you didn't really cover enough about why you would scale and how this model would help you to achieve this.
The ORM comment was controversial, but true depending on the context of the data being worked with. Lots of 'Things I've learned' sections, that seemed unnecessary but it did work!
Its a shame we missed out on the logging section, as I had a question about log aggregation across multiple applications e.g would you have a separate logging application to deal with this?
You probably should have had a mic, not really sure why you didn't!
Well done, I would also be absolutely terrified!
This talk for me was one of the best of the weekend. I have taken a lot away from this talk as I am nearly at the crash and burn stage of my XboxAPI project. Your talk really helped and has gave me a fantastic understanding of where I was going wrong.
Since your fantastic talk I have purchased the 'High Performance MySQL' book and have made plans from your advice to carve up XboxAPI into smaller tasks so that if one thing goes down the whole site does not die.
Personally I cannot wait for the video's to come out so that I can watch them again and show them to friends and help them learn from your mistakes and experience.
This talk really took the shine off of the event for me. The speaker seemed to almost be uninterested in giving the talk. He had no tone or enthusiasm and it felt more like lecturing than speaking.
The subject was aimed at business leaders and not really at developers but the subject could of been interesting however the way it was delivered seemed very disengaging.
From speaking to other people who attended the talk and gauging the reactions of people sitting near me the talk felt like a real downer.
The rest of the conference was awesome however and I feel if I had missed this talk I would of left on a real high.
Probably my favourite talk of the weekend.
I have been looking into logging recently and it was very beneficial for me to see how others were doing it. The live demos were good and it was more interesting than just following slides. Lots of good content and I will be looking into many of the things mentioned in this talk.
Very good talk, explaining the different types of noSQL solutions and how they work was interesting.
From what I remember though the circumstances in which you would choose SQL or noSQL was lacking.
This was a great talk, very entertaining, and covered many of the things that a lot of us may overlook when conducting code reviews.
I've made notes and will be reviewing the slides in order to distribute a summary to everyone at work!
